Pure Henna Plant Hair Dye for Blondes Gives Vibrant Auburn Red Hair Colour
Henna Mix contains pure henna plant dye along with a range of Ayurvedic hair care herbs for blondes:
Ingredients : lawsonia inermis (henna leaf), embelica officinalis (amla), acacia concinna (shikkakai), sapindus trifoliatus (reetha), eclipta erecta (bringraj), cyperus rotundus (nagar motha). Mixes to a beautifully smooth consistency ( could possibly pass for BAQ ) , and with its hint of floral undertones from the mixed herbs, it smells nicer than straight henna !
It colours slightly less intensely than pure henna without the herbal concoction. Use henna mix with cassia obovata at a ratio of 40 henna mix :60 cassia to get this light golden auburn result on blonde hair :

Henna Hair Colour Strand Tests
Hair colour strand tests don’t always give you an accurate prediction of your end result hair colour. And they don’t always take up colour like a full head of hair. Many strand tests give disappointing results which are nowhere near the results from a full hair colour application. Body temperature may make the difference. Your strand test hair also may not give a true indication of final hair shade because the strand test hair may have uneven colour saturation, especially if you’ve previously used hair dyes. Also remember that hennaed hair can look different in different light conditions so it’ll look different indoors compared to how it looks outdoors.
A Reminder about Previous use of Chemical Hair Dyes and Henna
If you’ve previously used chemical hair dyes, although you can go straight ahead and use henna / indigo, we recommend you wait as long as possible. We recommend a waiting time of at least 2 weeks, especially if you’ve just permed your hair. The longer the better. This is to allow time for your hair to detox from chemical hair dye build up. The wait will also ensure you get the best hair colour uptake from henna/indigo. It’s the compound “metallic salt mix” hennas which hairdressers generally moan about and say you can’t use before or after hair dyes. Our henna and indigo are not mixed with metallic salts. They are 100% pure henna and 100% pure indigo plant hair dyes. These are PPD free hair dyes, additive free, ammonia free, and chemical free. They are not the same stuff your hairdresser is talking about. Our henna and indigo are safe to use both before and after chemical hair dye, but we advise that you wait as long as you can before using hair dyes either side of henna.
Strand Test Hair Colour Pictures
Study the photographs of natural hair colour swatches showing how they colour with henna, and how they intensify to darker shades after the indigo application. The photos don’t do justice at all to the final end result colour – scroll down to the real life photos. The henna used for these strand tests was mixed with part lemon juice and part water so the resulting henna colour is lighter than it would have been with a straight hot water mix.

“Hi Sabrina
I finally did it! I decided to go for a pure henna application and I’m absolutely delighted with the result. I love the condition and strength I’ve achieved with the henna and I’m amazed at the hues and shades of red I’ve now got. I love my hair this colour and can’t wait for another application to try and go an even deeper red shade.
I went shopping the day after and a complete stranger came up to me and said, ’Excuse me, but you have the most beautiful hair colour I’ve ever seen”. I’ve never had such a lovely compliment from a stranger before and it made my day.
Thank you for your website and all your advice. Please feel free to use the pictures in your gallery.
Many kind regards from a very happy henna-ed girl!
Joanne”
Elaine – Henna on Blonde Hair
Elaine’s henna blog : http://blog.handfulofhenna.com/ – awesome !
Elaine : “I’ve been meaning to write up a little summary with a few key photos. My new recipe is 100g henna, about 1.5-2c chamomile, 2T olive oil, 2T paprika, and one or two drops lavendar. I leave it on for 3.5-4 hours, wash it out by combing conditioner through it, then blowdry it and wash it with shampoo a day later. It took me about three applications before the color was completely saturated to its final hue (which I ADORE!). Also, not including olive oil makes you “shed” an enormous amount of hair in the shower when you wash the henna out. (Carly noticed this too.)”

Carly’s Friend – Henna Lowlights on Blonde Hair
” The only downside to doing lowlights with henna is that if I had wanted to go in and do a second treatment to enrich the color, it would have been a major pain in the ass .. but still doable. I just did the top layer of hair so that if she didn’t like it, she could just pull it up but she ended up loving it!”

– ( sort of a strawberry blonde which, from the before photo, could pass as lightish blonde brown hair )
Hair Dye History : She had never used any chemical hair dyes before henna
Joan’s Henna Mix : “a mix of leftover paste and some cheap powder I bought from a local Indian grocery store. I mixed the henna with lemon juice and a bit of rosemary, mostly for scent. After I applied the paste I wrapped with plastic and a towel and left it covered for one hour.”Joan’s comments on henna : I’ve never been one to put chemicals or manufactured product into my hair beyond the basic shampoo and conditioner, so hearing about henna (a Natural alternative!) was too tempting to pass up. As it turned out, the red color suited me well and I’ve now hennaed my hair three times. Using henna in my hair leaves it amazingly soft and silky, well conditioned, and a bit thicker than before. Even when using stale or leftover mixtures I get great color that blends in well with my natural tones and highlights.”

Now the indigo black hair result after henna !
What Happens if you Indigo Bleached Blonde Hair After Henna? and what can you do to correct emerald green if you don’t like it ? read on…..

“Hi Sabrina
Sorry it took so long to get back to you with the photos. This month has flown by.
I think I am going to order some dbarrgh powder next time hoping to make the henna more red and less orange. I like the idea of redder rather than ginger hair. I tried applying the henna less carefully when I did it again recently but it did not take so well on the bleached bits. I think they are more resistant to the henna because they do not absorb liquid very well. So I guess I’ll have to apply carefully until either the hair is saturated with henna or the bleach grows out. I noticed the bleached areas fade much more quickly than on my natural hair colour too.
Thanks again for your advice,
Jane.”

“Hi Sabrina
I did another henna application yesterday and thankfully the green has gone. It is now a chocolate/auburn. It’s a bit darker than I would have liked but very nice. I am wondering whether the indigo might fade over time and lighten it up a bit. I am so glad I bought that extra bag of henna! I think the problem before may have been my henna application. Last time I used 11 scoops of henna and just mushed it into my hair. The second time I used a full bag and coated my hair strand by strand. Although my hair is only collar length it is very thick. I had to do it in 1/2 inch strands. I found if I did the strands any thicker there was hair in the middle that didn’t get coated. That may be because my hair is so dry from the bleach. It took me just over an hour to apply the henna!! It was like a thick mud pack on my head but did not itch me at all. I left it on for four hours just to be sure it covered all the green. Anyway I have caught up with watching all the programmes I had recorded on Sky+. ”
Indigo on blonde hair or gray hair
Pure indigo on its own on any light hair colour including grey hair, gray hair, blonde hair colour, or ash hair colour will turn blue or blue green. If you’re interested in a shade of blue, go ahead and strand test. Grey hair may feel dull and dry after indigo and it will lack the glossy effect that comes when it’s used with henna.
On dark hair colour indigo on its own will darken the hair even more and push towards black hair colour.
For brown and black hair colour starting on grey hair, make sure the hair is orange from your henna before using indigo. And if the grey hair looks bluish after using indigo ( rare, but it could happen if henna didn’t cover it properly), then just repeat the henna application followed by indigo again.
Always do a strand test and even if you like the idea of using indigo on its own, do experiment by using it after henna hair colour as well. We find find black hair with indigo is best achieved used after henna first and gives spectacular hair colour.
Finally, if you’ve used hair dyes and especially if you’re ever bleached or permed your hair, do not use indigo for at least 6 to 8 weeks since the last dye, perm, or bleach application. Indigo over bleached, dyed, and permed hair can turn it green. In the unlikely event of green hair, apply tomato sauce or ketchup in the hair, cover the hair with plastic wrap, leave in for up to an hour and shampoo out. Repeat applications may be necessary but the tomato sauce should get rid of any green. You can also apply henna again to correct the colour.
Blondes get the most out of plant based natural hair dyes. Pure henna on natural blonde hair colour and grey hair will turn it strawberry blonde through to copper blonde hair colour.
Indigo on blonde hair will turn it a light blue hair colour.
Indigo after henna in blonde hair will turn it brown through to black hair colour, depending how long you leave the indigo in for.
Henna gets you copper blonde hair highlights.
Cassia obovata naturally highlights and conditions blonde hair; cassia obovata with rhubarb root gives you golden yellow highlights.
Acacia catechu will also give copper highlights on blonde and a milder copper hair colour than pure henna on its own.
Cassia and hibiscus will give purple hair colour on blonde hair. Dbarrgh/ Oakwood Hair Dye Powder gives a semi permanent reddish hair colour, useful to experiment with pre permanent red hair colour with pure henna or henna mix. Plant hair dye couldn't be easier or more nourishing for blonde hair care and semi permanent blonde hair dye adventures.
